  1. Wow, seriously? I would have figured that out in about 10 minutes because my computer would have been offline too.
  2. It will be back, but it may take a couple of days. It will probably be the first one I work on after the new default.
  3. 9 injured, more feared trapped in Center City collapse CENTER CITY - June 5, 2013 (WPVI) -- A building collapsed at the corner of 22nd and Market streets in Center City Philadelphia, trapping a number of a people under the rubble. The 4-story building, which was connected to a Salvation Army Thrift Store on the southeast corner, collapsed at 10:45 Wednesday morning. The collapse brought down part of the thrift store and what appears to be converted row homes attached to the back of the building. http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=9127882 All over my local news this morning, happened just over an hour ago.
  4. Update is tentatively scheduled for June 22-23. Updates will begin fairly late on the 22nd EST so for much of the world it will be the 23rd. Another heads up but don't be surprised to see your custom skin selections defaulted when the site comes back online. Due to the complexity of rolling out customized skins we will likely only have a single skin immediately following the upgrade. Over the course of the following 1-2 weeks after the update I will then be working on rolling out updates to existing skins and new skins.
  5. If you missed the Humble deal, part of the Steam weekend sale is Alan Wake. Get the original for $3 or the bundle with American Nightmare for $4. This may only apply to the US, as I'm unsure how universal Steam sales are. http://store.steampo...com/app/108710/ Also, this weeks Humble sale is a great collection of Telltale games, including The Walking Dead.
  6. When viewing the topics list on a board, there is a menu that allows you to sort you view. In this case you are looking for "custom". I have displayed the option in the screenshot below.
  7. More active users should equate to more activity. Right now, most of the activity is video related. But imagine you see this: English Soccer: Last post Today, 2:15pm --Liverpool: Last post March 18, 2013 --Man. Utd.: Last post Feb 4, 2013 To someone viewing the England board, there's close to a 0% chance that someone would bother to click through to the Liverpool or Man. Utd. board. Where as if you have just a couple of active topics in the England board, people will see a last post date that is very recent, thus greatly increasing the chance they might bother to look into it. This example is actually what happened before the boards were combined. Most of the sub boards in English and Spanish soccer boards had last post dates that were beyond 2-3 months old. As a result, topic views in those boards dropped dramatically. Those boards were averaging only a handful of views in an entire month. There is still only minor improvements in combining the boards. For the month of May until today, there have been only 633 topic views in the England discussion board. If that were to be split with a subforum, the subforum would likely achieve about 40-50 views in a months time. Compare to England video, which is the same time period has seen 10,231 topic views. In regards to the cutoff, right now in most boards that is 90 days. Anything older is hidden from view, though can be found by adjusting your board view settings or through search. In boards where I will be making adjustments, that will be changed to "show all", so nothing will be hidden. Also, just to give a general idea of where board views are at the moment:
  8. I know what you are saying about organization, but the same holds true for activity. The reason they were consolidated is because in most categories there was very little posting. And when new visitors come by and see a forum that hasn't had an active post in 2+ months, they aren't going to even bother looking to see what is there, let alone starting new discussion, knowing it will probably just die off. By having a single active board, more topics are bouncing around. Even then I can still go to the England board and see some topics on the first page with a last post date in early March, nearly 3 months ago. This exactly. The purpose of the consolidation was to ensure fewer, more active boards. When for the example the England board is being flooded with Liverpool threads, then Liverpool obviously needs its own board. But when there are only 2-3 active topics (or less) for a team, sharing the main forum just makes more sense. As for hidden posts, that is something I do need to work on. In adding the cutoff period, it has hidden a lot of threads that are mostly to be found via search. While quite easy to adjust a cutoff when viewing a board it is not immediately clear to regular users. This is one area where another forum software (vBulletin) greatly excels in making it very clear where the cutoff is and a simple click to fix it. Likely I will drop the cutoff in a majority of discussion boards but leave it in place for videos.
  9. The text editor will change a bit especially where quoting is concerned. There will be a new "best answer" option available that will work in certain forums like video help and account support. The majority is behind the scenes revisions to admin controls, search engine optimization, etc. The skins currently set to depart are Eight, Modern and Classic. It is expected that Classic should make a fairly quick return. Modern may return, though the skin needs a lot of customizations for our use here. Eight currently I do not have an update that is compatible with the new upgraded board. Since there will be at least 2-3 new skins coming shortly after the upgrade you may find something else you like just as much.
  10. There's been some mention of such a setup for determining people in the room for payment. But this seems to be linked to an idea of having same day theatrical releases also available to pay for and watch at home. In which case, such a system would be understandable. But for any normal use like standard movie rental, this idea would be broken from the start. As with most video content these days, there are numerous legal sources to obtain video from, not to mention the less than legal options. If this were implemented on anything but a same day theatrical, people would just go elsewhere. Just in my house alone my Xbox, PS3, Roku, and WDTV boxes can all access pretty much the same content. Why pick the one that spies on you?
  11. I think you were on to something when you mentioned the Xbox One having its own thread. I didn't think we'd manage this much discussion about it, but since we have I split most of the posts on it to give X1 it's own thread. To hit a couple of the points you mentioned, good Internet/no Internet, that could be a problem. Not for you or I, as we seem to have a good enough connection. But having read that as many of 30% of Xbox 360's were never connected to the Internet seems like quite a risk that those people will not own the new machine. With the TV integration and NFL stuff, there is no doubt that they have put most of their focus on the American market. Maybe they will have more announcements in the future but it seemed strange they focused their attention the way they did. Always on, no doubt the entire purpose is DRM, regardless of how Microsoft spins it. Audio headsets don't overly concern me. I'm sure by the time the box releases there will already be adapters. Even then, I rarely use a headset anyway. I do hope the new controller is PC compatible in some way or that they continue to make the 360 wired controllers available, as I find they do work remarkably well for PC games that support controllers. Considering how many are just console ports these days though it's not really too surprising.
  12. We've had some discussion in the past about how those of you in the UK find some interesting things about America when it comes to violence and guns. Reading this piece today I couldn't help but think of how this was a uniquely British crime. Especially waiting 20 minutes for the cops to arrive. Or the fact that it took 20 minutes to find someone with a gun to show up. That people had no problem walking up to and talking to a pair of knife wielding crazies. As an American, the cultural differences amaze me. One thing I'm sure we can all agree on though is what a shame for the soldier and his family to be the victim of such an attack.
  13. I guess that is to be seen. Microsoft is intentionally not releasing this info fully yet. It's possible you could still boot but not start playing a new game you haven't played previously without an active connection. Quite correct. Even in this generation Sony has been much more interested in working with smaller developers. It appears this commitment will only expand with the PS4. If MS doesn't backpedal on some of these design decisions and Sony doesn't take the opportunity to add any ridiculous restrictions of their own I think the xbox one launch will be a disaster. Of course there's quite a possibility that a lot of people won't follow things as closely as we are. Rather, those are the people that will like their shiny new console until they find out just what those restrictions are all about. Then the complaints will really begin.
  14. Close enough. From what I've read, for single player games always-on is unnecessary, but regardless of what/how you're playing the machine needs a connection at least once per 24 hours. I also read a piece that mentioned that the system will need the connectivity to boot up. In either case it's not really a huge issue for me. I have a cable internet connection, which typically seems to go down for 30 minutes to an hour about twice a week (thanks Comcast!). Could be a problem if I wanted to start playing at that time, otherwise not an issue. Backwards compatibility is no big surprise. Neither PS4 or Xbox1 will be supporting it due to change in processor architecture. It's good in a way that I have a decent backlog of games still to play from this generation. It gives me a long time to watch and see how the new systems perform while I continue to play games on the old systems. By the time I'm ready for new stuff, the systems will have likely come down in price a bit and I will have a decent number of games available that will have become less costly as well. And if one system really does turn out to be a disaster, I'll already know to avoid it.
  15. Guess I should start a running number on how likely I am to buy this console as details emerge. Right now, I'd say about 25% likely. This info on lending games is a severe negative in my opinion due to fairly regular lending I do between friends. After buying a lot for 360 and trading/lending, I think at this rate interest in an Xbox One may be based on the availability of a non-Live connected modded box, something I haven't had to think about in nearly a decade.
  16. You didn't actually miss much at the beginning. A short intro speech followed by a video reveal of the machine itself. After that, 10-15 minutes were spent showing off the new Kinect and features using it to switch between games and tv and other stuff it can do. I actually interrupted a good nap to watch this reveal and the longer that went on the more I almost went back to sleep. As for the name, Xbox One is okay, but it sort of messes up references to the original Xbox, though I'm sure that isn't a mistake on Microsoft's part as I'm sure they want to forget that machine anyway. After reading the articles with Infinity as the tag I decided that I liked that name, so while disappointing it's really just the name of a box so not something to really be concerned about. The mandatory Kinect as mentioned above isn't a deal breaker, because I really don't care if it sits on top of my TV. But I still wonder just how well it will perform in a very, very limited amount of distance, not to mention the only light when I play games is from the TV itself. Besides, with all the talk of that thing constantly monitoring you, it will probably have a nice big piece of tape over the visual sensor in my room anyway. Of course, all of this is assuming that Microsoft actually announces interesting enough exclusives at E3 for me to even consider purchasing the box in the first place. Lastly, as for the mandatory installs, that doesn't much bother me. With the Xbox 360 I tend to install every game before I play, as it speeds up load times and decreases wear on the disc drive. On the other hand, if they do ANYTHING that messes with the used game market by adding fees or other difficulties to trading/lending, I will not get anywhere near this system. Period. A specs comparison of PS4 and Xbox One has been posted: http://shouts.tv/O
  17. Grocery store, nah. Haven't seen it in a very long time. Better off with specialty store or farmers markets. I know of at least 2-3 places within a reasonable distance where I could get it were I so inclined. You just might have to look around a bit outside of major grocery chains. Could also try online. Here's a place I've dealt with in the past and highly recommend for a friendly, independent company: http://www.flyingbeeranch.net/CombHoney.html
  18. Well, that was just bad. Just finished watching the reveal of the Xbox One. My rather unfortunate comments about Xbox and TV, Kinect and others seems to be exactly where they are headed. So much so, it seems they almost forgot about games, saves for EA Sports, and surprise, more Call of Duty. Also, still no mention of how mandatory Kinect will be, and how well it's going to work in a room space much smaller than the living room environment. And of course, no mention of hard drive sizes, mandatory installs, or constant connections being required. I'd say as of this point Microsoft has a long way to go to sell me on this next console. Sony on the other hand needs to continue on their current course, which seems far more in line with my wants and needs from a game console.
  19. Welcome (back?) to the site. I had noticed the signup date of last year. Coincidentally, we stopped deleting unused profiles about a week after you signed up. Seems like it may have been a good decision. I wonder how many others have joined and come back to sign in months later.
  20. Not sure where it would be dropping a letter. Just created a link to this thread as http://shouts.tv/shortannounce How long were you going for? Another potential bug is that random generation was only set to use lower case, so it's possible it was chopping the first letter on a custom URL if it was entered in upper case. I'm adjusting it to use a full character set now, which might resolve that problem (if it was even the issue to begin with).
  21. After getting a bit sidetracked with other work, I almost forgot about the work that needed to be done here. We now have a working home for Shouts.tv. While you can continue to create shortened links through SoccerShouts as usual, by using the homepage for Shouts.tv you can also create customized links (ie: shouts.tv/mylinkhere). Additionally, by adding the bookmarklet from the homepage to your bookmarks toolbar you can quickly create a short link from any page you are visiting. Let me know what you think of the new page and options: http://www.shouts.tv/
  22. I think the Blu-ray is a requirement really. Games keep getting bigger and no one wants to switch 5 dvd's as they play a game.
  23. I've deleted those threads for you. Also, the email you used on the other account was lfcau*********@hotmail.com. If you have any account issues in the future let me know.
  24. I may be becoming the minority, but I don't want to jump around or dance in front of my TV. I don't want motion controls and touch screens. With the PS3 I play with the gyroscopic functions off in any game that lets you. I don't own a Kinect, a Move, or any Nintendo system since the Gamecube. I know that as each generation approaches I find myself less interested, because a simple controller + tv isn't good enough anymore for the console manufacturers. If things continue this way, I'll be back to a keyboard and mouse with good old PC games again. And since a lot of games don't even make it to PC anymore, I think I will eventually have to find new hobbies. Hopefully that won't happen in the next generation of systems, but I do see it happening eventually.
